Following the principle recognition of CCS and RINA, the onboard high-gravity carbon capture system independently developed by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Technology (Weihai) Co., Ltd has recently received the principle recognition certificate from American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

ABS experts ultimately confirmed the onboard high-gravity carbon capture system meets the requirements of ABS regulations after a comprehensive review on the data in accordance with the published "Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage". They provided professional guidance on key indicator testing, absorbent usage, residue treatment and system applicability. The approval of this technology by ABS further enhances the system applicability and provides important guidance for the system compatibility design. It is expected to substantially promote the application of this technology on ships, which would be fundamentally promoted the decarbonization of the shipping industry.

COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Technology (Weihai) Co., Ltd. has developed two types of carbon capture systems. One is based on a high-gravity technology. It generates strong centrifugal force through high-speed rotation to achieve sufficient contact between the fluid and carbon dioxide for absorption. Another approach is based on spray technology, utilizing nozzle spraying to achieve gas-liquid mass transfer. The two technologies have their own advantages. Customized technical routes could be achieved by technological integration of two technologies, developing an efficient and compact onboard carbon capture system, which provides comprehensive solutions to carbon capture technology challenges.
